Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Animal Welfare.

Pat Carey

Question:

128 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will have arrangements made to make a financial allocation to the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to enable them to operate their service in the Dublin city and county area. [17739/97]

As I indicated to the House on 7 October, grants totalling £100,000 have been made to this society by my Department since September 1995 to alleviate its financial difficulties. It was not the intention that such payments would take place on a regular basis, and the society was so informed. While I am aware of the very valuable work which the society carries out for the welfare of animals generally in the Dublin area, I must necessarily reconcile a great many demands on the funds at my disposal. I will consider further financial assistance to the society in due course if available resources permit.
