Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Taxi Regulations.

Richard Bruton

Question:

266 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to meet Dublin taxi drivers regarding their request to change the current system for regulating taxis. [18032/97]

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1995 assigned principal responsibility for the regulation of taxi and hackney services to local authorities. In the Dublin area, co-ordination in relation to this function is provided by the Director of Traffic, Dublin Corporation with whom Dublin taxi groups are at present conducting discussions.

It is my practice as Minister for the Environment and Local Government to afford reasonable access to bona fide interest groups as regards matters for which I am directly responsible. In this context, I have sought clarification of a recent request for a meeting from the National Taxi Drivers Union, to which I hope to respond substantively as soon as possible.
