Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - UN Commissioner Meetings.

Dan Neville

Question:

50 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the plans, if any, he has to meet the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. [18108/97]

I am looking forward to meeting Mrs. Robinson at an early date. I know that everyone in this House is conscious of the importance of the position she occupies as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and I am happy to take this opportunity to renew my best wishes to her in the carrying out of her duties. She faces many difficult situations, as the expressions of concern in this House today on human rights abuses in a number of countries would indicate.

I am glad to inform the House that the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs with special responsibility for Overseas Development Assistance and Human Rights, Deputy Liz O'Donnell, will be meeting the High Commissioner in Geneva later this month and that they will have a wide-ranging discussion on current human rights issues.
