Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Liam Burke

Question:

246 Mr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí assigned to the Cork city Garda division; the number of gardaí assigned to the drugs squad; the number of civilians currently employed by the Garda in Cork to free gardaí from office and clerking duties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19370/97]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the strength of the Cork city Garda division, as of 3 November 1997 is 542 members, all ranks. The present strength of the drugs unit in the Cork city division is 22 members which comprises one inspector, two detective sergeants and 19 gardaí.

I have been informed that the number of civilian clerical staff currently employed by the Garda Síochána in the Cork city Division is 46. I understand that a further two posts are to be filled shortly.
