Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Prison Places.

Tony Gregory

Question:

296 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform further to Parliamentary Question No. 475 of 30 September 1997 the suitable vacancies, if any, which have arisen to date in 1997 in Wheatfield Prison, particularly in relation to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 10. [22599/97]

The Deputy will appreciate that, while vacancies arise in Wheatfield place of detention on a regular basis, it has been necessary, in recent times, to use these vacancies to alleviate overcrowding in other prisons. There are a number of offenders throughout the prison system, including the offender to whom the Deputy refers, who have been approved for transfer to Wheatfield. The position in relation to these offenders remains that their transfers will take effect as soon as suitable vacancies arise.
