Question:

265 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if there is a closed season for eel fishing; the details relating to this; the way in which these regulations are imposed by persons responsible for their supervision; and the reason for these regulations. [2028/98]

There are closed season by-laws in force in respect of eel fishing other than with rod and line in five districts throughout the country for the purpose of conserving stocks. Details of these are set out in the following table. The by-laws governing these close seasons are enforced by the staff of the relevant regional fisheries boards.
