Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Agriculture Policy.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

445 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if the Land Commission and Land Acts are guiding current agriculture policy or if he proposes alternatives in this regard. [1707/98]

Responsibility for formulating and guiding agriculture policy rests with me and my Department and I have no plans to propose alternatives in this regard.

The role of the Land Commission under the Land Acts has been to implement aspects of land policy, most notably the acquisition and redistribution of land. The dissolution of the Land Commission and the revocation of the compulsory acquisition powers provided in the Land Acts will on the commencement of the Land Commission (Dissolution) Act, 1992, simply give legislative effect to the decision to terminate that element of land policy.
