Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Law Reform Commission.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

541 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Health and Children the reports, or parts of reports, of the Law Reform Commission relevant to his Department which have not been implemented to date; whether implementation is under consideration or will be proposed in relation to each recommendation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1128/98]

The only report of the Law Reform Commission containing recommendations relevant to the Department of Health and Children is the Commission's Report on Child Sexual Abuse. The main recommendation relevant to the Department of Health and Children concerned the introduction of mandatory reporting of child sexual abuse-as defined by the commission — by doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, health workers, social workers, probation officers and teachers. There is a commitment to the introduction of mandatory reporting in the Programme for Government.

The report also made a number of detailed recommendations regarding investigations, case conferences, day care and emergency care proceedings, and I will write to the Deputy separately with further information in relation to these matters.
