Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Charitable Donations.

Question:

542 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will give details of moneys given by his Department to charities for each of the years from 1990 to date in 1998; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1238/98]

My Department allocates funds to various agencies and organisations for the provision of health and personal social services. Funding is made available to agencies in accordance with conditions attaching to the Health and Children's Vote, including lottery grants which are listed in the schedules attaching to the Appropriation Accounts from 1993 onwards and in the National Lottery Beneficiary Compendium published by the Department of Finance.

The majority of agencies and organisations funded through my Department would, in fact, be registered as charities with the Revenue Commissioners. This is primarily to enable such agencies and organisations to avail of the appropriate tax relief, having regard to the nature of the services they provide.
