Written Answers. - Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors.

Liz McManus

Question:

597 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of non-consultant hospital doctors appointed to Irish hospitals for each of the years from 1994 to date in 1998; and the number of these appointees who were of Irish nationality. [1972/98]

Information with regard to new appointments to NCHD positions is not collected by my Department. However, the number of non-consultant hospital doctors working in Irish hospitals on 31 December 1994, 1995 and 1996 was as follows:

31/12/94

31/12/95

31/12/96

NCHDs

2,549

2,648

2,562

1996 is the latest year for which figures are available: figures for 31 December 1997 are currently in the process of being compiled. Statistics in relation to the nationality of people appointed to positions in the health service are not collected by my Department.
