Written Answers. - Inland Waterways.

Seán Haughey

Question:

726 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if she intends to implement the Royal Canal Corridor Study 1995 in relation to the section of the canal between Clarke's Bridge and Russell Street, Jones Road, Ballybough, Dublin 3; if funding is available from her Department or the EU for this purpose; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the GAA development plans for Croke Park will impact on this section of the canal; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1601/98]

The Royal Canal Corridor Study was launched in 1996 with the broad aim of providing a physical planning framework for the revitalisation of the canal corridor, that will synthesise existing environmental, social and economic elements in a co-ordinated and integrated manner. The strategy and recommendations set out in the study are not "set in stone". Nevertheless, I hope that the general thrust of the proposals can be implemented in due course along the corridor with the assistance of local communities, the statutory authorities, and the private sector. However, at this stage I cannot provide a timescale for the implementation of the proposals. The section of canal between Clarke's Bridge and Russell Street Bridge was dredged and restored to navigation in 1992. It is proposed to install a lifting bridge at Newcommon Junction, near North Strand Road, later this year, which will facilitate opening the navigation to the Liffey. Furthermore, a major fish stocking programme has been undertaken in the Ballybough area in recent years to develop the fishing potential of the canal and to help encourage the promotion of angling in the area.

The Deputy will note that the corridor study provided endorsement for the Croke Park development proposals, stating the "proposed GAA development should contribute positively to the canal corridor". The GAA has received the co-operation of my Department in developing their plans for the new stadium development and they have obtained the necessary planning permission. I believe that the enhancement works being carried on the canal as part of the GAA project will add to the canals' amenity value.
