Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

761 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the current staffing of gardaí in Carbury, County Kildare; the number of indictable offences detected and brought to prosecution in this station for each of the years from 1993 to 1997; if he has satisfied himself with the current level of policing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1535/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that the current strength of Carbury Garda station is one sergeant and one Garda. However, I understand from them that following the promotion of the sergeant at Rathcoole, the sergeant at Carbury has been on temporary transfer to Rathcoole Garda station since 20 June 1997. It is anticipated that the sergeant will return to Carbury in the near future.

The indictable crime statistics for Carbury for each of the years 1993 to 1997 are as follows:

*It should be noted that the 1997 figures are provisional.
The Garda authorities have informed me that they are satisfied with the present level of policing in the Carbury sub-district. The area is currently policed by the Garda allocated to Carbury Garda station. I understand from them that a vanette which is shared with the neighbouring station at Robertstown is available to him for the purpose of carrying out mobile patrols in the sub-district. These patrols are augmented by regular patrols carried out by mobile units from Newbridge Garda station and the district headquarters at Kildare station.
