Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Michael Ring

Question:

785 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when the vacant sergeant's post in Newport, County Mayo will be filled. [1845/98]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have informed me that following the retirement of the sergeant at Newport Garda station on 2 September 1991, the personnel strength of the station to date is two gardaí. However, I understand that one of the sergeants based at Westport Garda station has supervisory responsibility in relation to all policing matters pertaining to the Newport sub-district. The Garda authorities have informed me that when members of sergeant rank next become available for allocation the question of filling the sergeant's vacancy at Newport will be fully considered in conjunction with the filling of similar vacancies throughout the country.
