Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

933 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if, following the awarding of higher education grants, the subsequent payment of a personal injury award will affect the student's eligibility for the grant; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2070/98]

Compensation paid as a result of a personal injury award is not assessable as reckonable income for the purpose of the higher education grants scheme, except where the award includes a payment for loss of earnings in respect of the year of assessment in which case the payment is assessable as reckonable income.

Interest earned on investments, including personal injury awards which are invested, is also assessed as reckonable income.
