Vol. 486 No. 1

Written Answers. - Arms Crisis.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

146 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Taoiseach if his attention has been drawn to newspaper reports suggesting that files relating to the illegal attempt to import arms in 1970 were missing from his Department; whether these files are still in his Department; when they will be released to the National Archive; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1732/98]

Records relating to the matters in question, which occurred in 1970, are not due to be considered for release under the National Archives Act, 1986, until they are 30 years old. The newspaper reports suggesting that files are missing from State archives may reflect the fact that many records relating to the events in question are not yet 30 years old.

In so far as my Department is concerned, I can confirm that the files relating to this matter are accounted for.
