Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - Legal Aid Service.

John Perry

Question:

261 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps, if any, which have been taken to alleviate the serious backlog that has arisen at the legal aid centre in Sligo; the steps, if any, which have been taken to recruit additional staff; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2735/98]

The Legal Aid Board constantly assesses the level of demand in law centres and reallocates staff, within the overall permitted staff numbers between law centres to meet particular needs. In this regard, I am advised by the board that it will be assigning an additional solicitor on a temporary part-time basis to Sligo law centre soon. This arrangement should have the effect of reducing the waiting period there. The effectiveness of the arrangement will be kept under continuing review.
