Vol. 486 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

271 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will consider an extension of the pick-up point to facilitate the children attending a school (details supplied) in County Cavan; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the present pick-up point is in a dangerous part of the road and on the site of a hill with no view; and if he will extend this route to a turning point at a quarry on this road for the safety of all concerned. [2496/98]

Safety is of paramount importance to my Department, and to Bus Éireann, who operate the school transport scheme on its behalf. Pick-up, set-down and turning points are carefully selected, always with safety in mind.

The location of the pick-up point referred to was changed in January 1997 to a safer position where there is a better view of the road.

The parents of the children in question recently contacted my Department to advise that the road to the pick-up point was flooded.

A detailed report on this aspect of the case has been sought from Bus Éireann. My Department will consider the contents of this report when it is received and the Deputy will be informed of the outcome.
