Vol. 488 No. 5

Written Answers - Asylum Applications.

Question:

115 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of applicants for asylum that have appealed their cases for leave to remain in Ireland on humanitarian grounds; and the number that he has granted leave to remain in Ireland. [6802/98]

It is possible for persons who have been refused recognition as refugees to make a case to me for temporary leave to remain in the State. To date I have received 45 such cases for consideration and 18 people have been granted temporary leave to remain. A total of nine have had their applications turned down and a further 18 are under consideration.

Question:

116 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of deportations of refused applicants for asylum for each month for which information is available since January 1996. [6803/98]

One refused asylum seeker has been deported since January 1996. This occurred on 5 June, 1997. A total of eight asylum seekers whose cases fell to be considered by another signatory state to the Dublin Convention have been transferred to those states. Two persons were transferred in February, 1988 and a further six persons in March, 1998 — up to 10 March, 1998.

Question:

117 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of applicants for asylum processed under the arrangements to deal with applicants for asylum announced on 10 December 1997; the number of cases where a ruling that the application is manifestly unfounded has been given; and the countries of origin of the applicants whose application has been determined as manifestly unfounded. [6805/98]

No applications have been considered to finality under the procedures announced on 10 December 1997 and no applications have yet been deemed to be manifestly unfounded.
