Vol. 488 No. 6

Written Answers. - Licensing Laws.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

131 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the instruction, if any, he has issued or the decision, if any, taken that certain Garda divisions are to intensify the insistence on early closing of licensed premises; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6690/98]

The enforcement of the particular provisions of the liquor licensing laws referred to by the Deputy is a matter for the Garda Síochána and I have no function in the matter. As such laws are of uniform application, I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are enforced in a uniform manner countrywide.

In certain circumstances, exemption orders can be granted by the District Court and conditions may attach to these orders on the application of the local superintendent. In such cases, it is a matter for local Garda management to see to it that the conditions attaching to the order are satisfied.
