Vol. 489 No. 1

Written Answers. - Relationships and Sexuality Education.

Liz McManus

Question:

65 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools expected to implement the relationships and sexuality education programme from 1999; the number of schools where introductory meetings on the programme have been held for parents; if he has satisfied himself with the rate of progress on the programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7450/98]

I expect all schools will implement a relationships and sexuality education programme by 1999.

To date, 65 parent information seminars have been organised through the education centre network at various locations throughout the country. On average, these seminars have been attended by between 100 and 350 parents. Approximately 445 seminars have been directly organised by individual schools for their parent body. This work is ongoing.

I am satisfied with the progress that is being made regarding the introduction of RSE. In this context, the issue of the recent newsletter to all schools and the ongoing work of the full-time RSE support service, have helped to move matters forward.
