Vol. 489 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Enda Kenny

Question:

200 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the dilapidated condition of the Garda station at Ballyvary, Castlebar, County Mayo; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that the section of the building unused for public purposes is an eye sore and is not conducive to the Garda Síochána being able to do its duty properly; the proposals, if any, the Office of Public Works has for this building; if the Office of Public Works would sell this building to the local community; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9567/98]

It is proposed, as soon as funding and other Garda building priorities permit, to build a new Garda station at Ballyvary. It would then be a matter for the Office of Public Works to decide the future use of the vacated premises. I assume that office would examine any proposal the Deputy or the local community would wish to make in that regard.

Noel Ahern

Question:

201 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position regarding plans to refurbish and upgrade Whitehall Garda station, Dublin 9; the estimated cost; and the target date for commencement of work. [9642/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda housing officer will be visiting this building in the near future and that a decision in relation to any necessary works will be made following his inspection.
