Vol. 490 No. 6

Written Answers. - Unidroit Convention.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

73 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the legislation she will introduce arising from the Law Reform Commission's report on the Unidroit Convention on stolen or illegally exported cultural objects; and when this legislation will be introduced. [10850/98]

I am in ongoing consultation with my Cabinet colleagues, particularly the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform and the Attorney General regarding the issues that arise in relation to the ratification and subsequent implementation of the Unidroit Convention on stolen or illegally exported cultural objects, in order to identify and clarify the steps, including legislation, needed to give effect to the convention. I will bring forward proposals for ratification by the Government of the convention in due course.
