Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Genetically Modified Crops.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

111 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to introduce a moratorium on modified crops. [10979/98]

The conditions under which the trials currently being carried out in this country on genetically modified crops for placing on the market under Directive 90/220/EEC, are a matter for the Environmental Protection Agency. The question of the introduction of a moratorium on such crops is a matter for the EPA and the Minister for the Environment and Local Government who, I understand, intends to publish a paper shortly which will form the basis of future Government policy on the subject.
