Vol. 490 No. 7

Written Answers. - Social Work Qualifications.

Richard Bruton

Question:

226 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the only professional qualification course available to mature students who seek recognition as professional social workers has ceased; and the plans, if any, he has to discuss with appropriate colleges the possibility of providing an alternative in this regard. [10995/98]

The National University of Ireland, Cork provided a three year course for such students up to the academic year 1997-8. The decision to cease the course arose from requirements for entry to professional social work arising from an EU directive. The National Social Work Qualifications Board, which is under the aegis of the Department of Health and Children, is the body responsible for deciding on the recognition of academic courses for professional workers in the health and children area. A four year course is the norm for such recognition.

I understand that the National University of Ireland, Cork is now completing a submission to the board for a four year course suitable for mature students and that if recognition is obtained, the college hopes to offer the course from October 1999.
