Vol. 491 No. 2

Written Answers. - Racist Attacks.

Michael Ferris

Question:

47 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the indications, if any, there are that the pattern of recent racist attacks throughout Ireland suggest the operation of organised racist groups; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11499/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there is no evidence of assaults on non-nationals which would suggest an organised pattern as described by the Deputy. Since the beginning of the year, the Garda has dealt with two incidents where non-nationals were assaulted. In relation to one case, four persons have been charged and are before the courts. The second case is still under investigation.
