Question:

144 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the surveys, if any, carried out with regard to the number of people who comply with the wearing of seat belts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11590/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the most recent survey of seat belt wearing rates in Ireland was carried out in 1991 by the environmental research unit. A summary of the results of the survey was published, entitled "Seat Belt Wearing Rates in Ireland 1991, RS 408", and copies are available from the National Roads Authority, St. Martin's House, Waterloo Road, Dublin 4.
