Question:

252 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools at primary level, and the number of pupils on their rolls, who do not have access to a remedial teacher. [13467/98]

There are 727 mainstream primary schools which do not currently have access to a remedial teaching service. The total enrolment in these schools is approximately 46,000 pupils.

It is my intention to ensure that a remedial resource is made available to all primary schools.

Question:

253 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of schools at second level, and the number of pupils on their rolls, who do not have access to an ex-quota remedial teacher. [13470/98]

In the current school year there are 350 ex-quota remedial posts allocated to second level schools, of which 140 are allocated to the vocational sector. There are 326 secondary, community and comprehensive schools which do not have an ex-quota remedial post. The total enrolment is these schools is of the order of 153,000.

In the case of the vocational sector, teaching resources are generally allocated to the VEC scheme and not to individual schools. It is a matter for the relevant chief executive officer, with the agreement of the VEC, to allocate resources to individual schools from within the overall approved allocation for the scheme. Details of the distribution of the remedial resources between schools in this sector are not readily available.

The total second level enrolment in the vocational sector is approximately 97,300.
