Vol. 492 No. 2

Written Answers. - Economic Performance.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

109 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance whether he has satisfied himself that economic performance is in keeping with budgetary projections; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13827/98]

I am satisfied that the performance of the economy over the past six months has lived up to budget day expectations. At that time GNP was forecast to increase by 7 per cent in 1998 with employment growth of 48,000. All available indicators suggest that these forecasts will be achieved.

My Department will publish an updated assessment in "Economic Review and Outlook" next month. The budget day outlook will be reviewed to take into account all the relevant information which has come to light since December last.
