Vol. 492 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Recruitment.

Andrew Boylan

Question:

297 Mr. Boylan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if there is a system in place whereby an Irish man serving in the British police in London can transfer to the Garda Síochána in view of the fact that the person in question is anxious to bring up his young family in this country; if he will consider the application of a person (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14380/98]

The Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations, 1988, as amended, prescribe the criteria for admission of trainees to the Garda Síochána. While the regulations make no provision for direct transfer to the Garda Síochána from another police force, they do not include any requirements as to nationality or residence. Similarly, I am not aware of any facility for direct transfer of members of the Garda Síochána to UK police forces.

If the person in question meets the general criteria for admission to the force as a trainee, it is open to him to make an application when a competition for Garda recruitment is next advertised.
