Vol. 493 No. 2

Written Answers. - Youth Services.

John McGuinness

Question:

190 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the allocation from the national lottery for youth services in 1998 and the way in which it compares to previous years; the plans, if any, there are to increase the level of funding in this area; if so, the amount of the increase; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15584/98]

The following amounts were made available for youth services in the years 1995-98:

National Lottery

Total

£

£

1995 — 11,992,286

12,615,000

1996 — 13,283,000

13,908,000

*1997 — 12,720,000

13,345,000

*1998 — 12,941,000

13,567,000

* The reduction in funding in 1997 and 1998 reflects the transfer of a number of projects for the disadvantaged, mainly to the Department of Health and Children.
Additional funding is being sought for 1998 and in the event of such funding becoming available, the level of support made available to youth organisations will be reviewed.
