Vol. 493 No. 3

Written Answers. - Criminal Prosecutions.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

393 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of prosecutions brought since 1960 in relation to offences under the Public Bodies Corrupt Practices Act, 1889, and Prevention of Corruption Acts, 1906 and 1916; and the number of acquittals and convictions on these prosecutions. [15989/98]

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that the information requested by the Deputy in relation to the period before 1986 is not readily available and could only be obtained by the use of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources.

From 1986 to 1989 there were no prosecutions. In 1990 there were three prosecutions against the same individual. Anolle prosequi was entered in all three cases. In 1991 and 1992 there were no prosecutions. In 1993 there was one prosecution and an individual was convicted. In 1994, 1995 and 1996 there were no prosecutions. The statistics for 1997 have not yet been published and are therefore not available.
