Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Question:

424 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the number of local authorities who had completed all the preliminary regulations for his approval in the development of public swimming pools during each of the years from 1996 to 1998; the amounts sought and the amount outstanding on 30 June 1998; and the number of projects approved to go to tender. [16272/98]

Responsibility for the swimming pool programme recently transferred to my Department from the Department of the Environment and Local Government. The number of projects on hand in that Department which had been deemed to have met preliminary approval requirement at the time of transfer was 37, involving 30 local authorities and a total grant aid requested of £46,382,603.

The comparable figures for 1996 and 1997 are set out in the following table:

No. of Local Authorities

No. of Projects

Amount of Grant Aid requested

1996

28

32

£35,877,957

1997

£48,280,429

A sum of £10 million is committed to 13 projects where work is under way. There are 24 projects awaiting approval to proceed to the next stage, with £31,542,200 being sought by way of grant-aid. A total of 19 projects were given approval to go to tender in the period from 1996-98.
