Written Answers. - Deaths by Violence.

Jim Higgins

Question:

159 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of persons who have died in violent circumstances to date in 1998; and the number of persons charged in respect of these. [16549/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that deaths in violent circumstances have resulted in the recording of 16 suspected murders and four suspected cases of man-slaughter to date in 1998. I am further informed that ten persons are recorded as having been charged in respect of nine of these cases.
