137 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the reason the owners of land (details supplied) in County Mayo on which a fort was found were not informed of the find; and the significance it would have on the value and sale of the land. [18654/98]

Question:

139 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands whether the owners of land (details supplied) in County Mayo will be compensated as a result of a fort find, of which they had no knowledge and which severely affected the planning position and the sale of the land which was nearing completion. Tógfaidh mé Ceisteanna Uimh. 136, 137, 138 agus 139 le chéile.

The monument in question was included in the record of monuments and places for County Mayo. The RMP consists of a set of constraint maps with an accompanying index which shows the locations of monuments and places which are protected under the national monuments Acts, and was prepared under section 12 of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1994, and SI No. 341 of 1994.

A public notice was placed in The Irish Times and Irish Independent on 29 April 1997, and in the Western People that same week, advising of the availability of the County Mayo RMP for inspection by members of the public in Mayo County Council offices, Mayo County Library and local branches, various farm development service offices through the country, as well as Teagasc offices in County Mayo.

There is no provision under the national monuments Acts for payment of compensation to landowners and no further archaeological investigation is planned. I am not in a position to say what, if any, effect the existence of the monument has in respect of planning permission or property value.
