Vol. 494 No. 5

Written Answers. - Pupil-Teacher Ratio.

John McGuinness

Question:

147 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the suggestions made recently by the ASTI which called for the phased reduction in the appointment ratio to 15 to 1 in order that class sizes can be reduced below the current norm of 30, the phased introduction of a deputy principal in addition to other teaching staff to all schools, the phased introduction of remedial teacher posts in addition to other teaching staff to all schools, the phased introduction of guidance counsellor posts in addition to other teaching staff for all schools and the phased introduction of home shcool liaison teachers for all schools. [18924/98]

It is incorrect to suggest that the norm for class sizes at second level is 30.

The Deputy will appreciate that the question of reducing the pupil teacher ratio and allocating additional ex-quota or concessionary posts to second level schools must be considered in the context of available resources.
