Vol. 498 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pesticide Controls.

Denis Naughten

Question:

160 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the plans, if any, he has to ensure that there is a reduction in pesticide residues found in vegetables; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26393/98]

Monitoring and testing for pesticide residues in vegetables carried out by the pesticide control service of my Department has shown that the level of residues is very low. A national pesticide monitoring and enforcement programme is undertaken annually and is designed to ensure that pesticide residues in food do not exceed the maximum residue limits established in statutory regulations. The programme is being intensified. In addition a programme of workshop seminars has been initiated for producer groups and growers to ensure responsible use of plant protection products to minimise the danger of residues occurring.
