Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Badger Snaring Licences.

Denis Naughten

Question:

199 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will approve a wildlife snaring project for County Roscommon in view of the fact that his Department within the county is unable to service any wildlife licences due to a staff shortage; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6080/99]

In the context of epidemiological investigations into bovine TB breakdowns, applications are made to the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands for badger snaring licences. In 1998 a total of 12 applications for licences were approved by the National Parks and Wildlife Service of that Department for County Roscommon and 45 badgers were removed for research purposes. The position in this area will continue to be monitored.
