Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Listed Buildings.

John Gormley

Question:

279 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the need to strengthen legislation in relation to listed buildings in light of the unauthorised destruction of the Owenbue Mill, Carrigaline, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5842/99]

The Local Government (Planning and Development) Bill, 1998, which will strengthen the legislative protection afforded to buildings and structures of architectural interest has passed all stages in Seanad Éireann and is currently awaiting Second Reading in the Dáil.

However, it should also be noted that under current planning laws the carrying out of unauthorised development is an offence with potential fines of up to £1 million and/or two years imprisonment for conviction on indictment.
