Vol. 501 No. 3

Written Answers. - Teacher Education Programmes.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

380 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has put in place a review of teacher education programmes; if so, the format and projected timescale of the review; the persons involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6204/99]

I have established two expert advisory groups, one to review the content and duration of pre-service teacher education programmes in the colleges of education and the other to review the content and duration of teacher education programmes for second level teachers. Both groups had their inaugural meetings on 28 January 1999. I have asked the groups to report to me within six months.

The members of both groups were selected on the basis of their expertise in the areas under review. The membership of the primary level group, which is chaired by Dr. Tom Kellaghan, Director of the Educational Research Centre in St. Patrick's College, Drumcondra, is: Sydney Blain, Catherine Byrne, John Carr, Ann Colgan, Catherine Furlong, Gabriel Harrison, Siobhán Hurley, Jacqueline Ní Fheargusa, Caoimhe Ní Mháirtín, Seán Ó Fiachra, Micheál Ó Fiannachta, Pat O'Keeffe, Deirdre O'Keeffe, Sr. Eileen Randles and Eugene Wall.
The second level group is chaired by Professor Ciaran R. Byrne, Vice-President of the University of Limerick. The membership of the group is: Claire Broderick, Michael Corley, Geraldine Farrell, Father Nicholas Flavin, Donie Garvey, Maureen Killeavy, John McGowan, Anne Marie Moore, John Mulcahy, John O'Brien, Carl Ó Dálaigh, Pádraig Ó Ríordáin, Tadhg Ó Siochain, Susan M. Parkes, Anne Rath and Rose Tully.
