Vol. 501 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Liz McManus

Question:

161 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education and Science if additional staff will be allocated to Scoil Mochua, Clondalkin, County Dublin, in view of the need for extra physio, occupational and speech therapists; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6299/99]

The therapy services in question have traditionally been provided by the relevant health authority. I understand the Eastern Health Board and the Department of Health and Children currently provide funding for therapy services to the school in question, through grant aid to the Central Remedial Clinic.

I have asked my officials to consult with the relevant health authorities in relation to the therapy service needs of the school in question and how these can best be addressed.

Dan Neville

Question:

162 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Education and Science the policy of his Department in responding to dyslexic children at second level schools and colleges. [6303/99]

Second level pupils with specific learning disability, including dyslexia, are normally integrated into ordinary classes. In such situations they may receive additional tutorial support through the remedial teacher, guidance counsellor and subject teachers. Depending on the degree of the condition, special arrangements may be made for them in the certificate examinations.

There are at present 350 ex-quota remedial teachers at second level. I recently announced a major new funding initiative for the education sector. As a core element of this, a total of 225 new second level teachers will be appointed this year. These new teachers will enable a move towards the provision of a remedial resource in all second level schools.

The needs of children with specific learning disability and the consideration of how best to address these needs within available resources will continue to be kept under constant review in my Department.
