Vol. 501 No. 6

Written Answers. - Home Educators Network.

John Gormley

Question:

437 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the home educators network; and his views on parents educating their children at home. [7071/99]

I am aware of the home educators network and their interest in promoting the right of parents to educate their children at home.

I can assure the Deputy that I fully recognise and respect the constitutional right of parents to elect to educate their children at home, if they so wish. As Minister for Education and Science, I am fully committed to upholding the right of parents to make such a choice. However, the Deputy will appreciate that I also have an obligation to ensure that children being educated at home receive an adequate education service.

I am satisfied that the forthcoming Education (Welfare) Bill will give full expression to the rights of parents in this area, while at the same time ensuring that children educated at home receive an adequate education service. I expect that the Bill will be published shortly.
