Vol. 504 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Creed

Question:

77 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that St. Gabriel's special school, Curraheen, Cork, has notified the parents of one of the pupils (details supplied) attending that it can no longer facilitate his travel on the school bus service due to his medical condition; and if he will ensure that adequate transport arrangements are made for this child. [12485/99]

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers. I can assure him that I am anxious that this matter be resolved as soon as possible and that suitable transport arrangements be made for the child in question. My Department is in ongoing contact with the board of management of the school in an effort to make suitable arrangements for the child.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

78 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress made with regard to providing drivers aids or helpers on buses which take children with physical or intellectual disabilities to schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12496/99]

My Department is currently making arrangements for the introduction of escorts on all special school transport services carrying children with disabilities to special schools and special classes. It is intended that this expanded escort service will be in place by September next.
