Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - State Companies.

Seán Haughey

Question:

136 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she is committed in the interests of social partnership to retaining worker directors on the boards of semi-State companies even in the event of privatisation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12549/99]

The Worker Participation (State Enterprises) Acts, 1977 and 1988, provide for the appointment of worker directors to the boards of some State companies under my aegis. Telecom Éireann is the only State body where the question currently arises of retaining worker directors on the board in the context of the State reducing its shareholding to a minority position. The Department of the Taoiseach is currently in discussion with the social partners, within the parameters of Partnership 2000, in regard to the broader issue of employee participation on the boards of former State companies.
