Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

140 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Defence the progress, if any, made towards the development of the lands at Murphy barracks, Ballincollig, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12958/99]

A tender competition for the appointment of independent consultants to draw up an integrated action area plan for the future development of lands at the former Murphy Barracks is at present in progress in my Department. I expect this process to be completed by early June 1999, after which the successful firm will be required to submit a report within three months.

Phil Hogan

Question:

141 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the recent comments made by the Chief of Staff regarding barrack closures and the unease that this has created among the staff of James Stephens Barracks, 30th Battalion, Kilkenny, in respect of the future plans for the retention of the barracks; if he will confirm that the Army barracks will remain in Kilkenny; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13010/99]

The Government, on 15 July 1998 approved a programme of evacuation and sale of six military barracks which are considered surplus to requirements. There are no plans to close any other barracks.
