Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - State Funding.

John Gormley

Question:

211 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will report on the ratio of Government funding to non-governmental organisations dedicated exclusively to the welfare of males compared to those directing their services primarily towards females in view of the statistics that four out of five suicides are males; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12629/99]

Ivan Yates

Question:

232 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Health and Children the level of Government funding for voluntary organisations dedicated exclusively to the welfare of males; and if there is any published data on any ratios of funding in this regard based on gender in view of the fact that four out of five suicides in Ireland are male which may be indicative of social pressures on young men in particular. [12888/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 211 and 232 together.

The Government does not discriminate along the lines of gender in its funding of organisations, either statutory or non-statutory, involved in the area of suicide and suicide prevention. Funding is provided for organisations engaged in suicide prevention for the entire population – male and female, young and old.
