Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Law Reform.

Nora Owen

Question:

317 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to meet with the national newspapers, the Regional Newspapers Association of Ireland and the National Union of Journalists concerning their requests for changes in the libel laws; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12957/99]

While I have met representatives of both the National Newspapers of Ireland and the Regional Newspaper Association of Ireland in the past to discuss the reform of the law on defamation, no recent requests have been received by my office from these organisations or from the National Union of Journalists for a meeting with me.

Work is in progress in my Department at present on the preparation of a scheme of a defamation Bill.
