Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - Parental Leave Directive.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

318 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the response, if any, he has received from the European Commission to the Government's explanation of its implementation of the Parental Leave Directive (96/34/EC) sent to the commission on 4 May 1999; and, if so, if he will outline the substance of the response. [13014/99]

My Department has not yet received a reply from the European Commission to the Government's letter of 4 May 1999, which outlined the reasons the approach taken in the Parental Leave Act, 1998, was adopted. The matter is now in the hands of the European Commission.

I have arranged for the Deputy to receive a copy of the Government's letter of 4 May 1999 and for a copy to be placed in the Dáil Library.
