Question:

379 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the extent to which primary and secondary educational needs of the Naas, Sallins and Kill areas of County Kildare are met; the options likely to be followed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13046/99]

The primary accommodation needs of the Naas area are being met in the short term by the provision of prefabricated accommodation for the 1999-2000 school year. The longer-term requirements will be met by the provision of a new sixteen classroom school, which will be provided as soon as possible.

With regard to Sallins, the short and long-term needs of the primary school is currently being assessed in consultation with the local inspector. Any additional requirements identified will be addressed as expeditiously as possible.

The primary school in Kill is being provided with a double prefab to meet demand for pupil places for next September. In addition, the building unit of my Department is arranging for a technical assessment of the school site to be carried out to ascertain it's potential for further development to cater for the longer-term needs of the area.

At second level in Naas building projects are under way at each of the three existing schools. The second level schools in Naas cater for the Kill and Sallins areas.

The Deputy will appreciate that this scale of investment has only become possible due to the major increase in school building funds received by my Department.
