Question:

387 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the combined number of second level school places available in Naas, Celbridge, Leixlip, Maynooth, Kilcock and Clane, County Kildare; the number by which this capacity will be increased; the timescale in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13057/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 386 and 387 together.

St. Patrick's College, Naas, has accommodation for around 500 pupils. The proposed building project is to provide major improvement works to the existing school building and will not provide additional pupil places.

The second level schools in the areas, referred to by the Deputy, have a combined total of around 6,000 permanent pupil places. As the Deputy is aware there are a number of building projects, at various stages of architectural planning, involving schools in these areas. When these projects are completed, the overall number of permanent pupil places will increase to around 8,000.

The Deputy will appreciate that these projects are proceeding due to the major increase in capital funding allocated to my Department in the last two years.
