Vol. 504 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Denis Naughten

Question:

66 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to a survey conducted by Roscommon Partnership Company showing that 21 schools in County Roscommon are without hot water; the plans, if any, he has to rectify this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12119/99]

The provision of services such as hot water is a matter for the local school authorities in the first instance. In the case of primary schools, the devolved grants scheme for minor works is designed to assist schools financially in undertaking the necessary work involved. The annual allocation is £2,000 per school plus £9 per pupil. Under the terms of Circular 3 of 1996, the boards of management of primary schools have full responsibility for the proper execution of these works. It is also open to individual school management boards to apply to my Department for grant assistance towards capital works not covered by the scheme.
